If taken internally:
An antidote should be taken immediately, but do not attempt to induce vomiting. Large quantities of dilute vinegar and citrus juices are recommended. If not immediately available, the patient should drink all the water he can take without delay. After the caustic soda has been neutralized or diluted, mineral oil or egg whites may be administered for a soothing effect. A doctor should be summoned immediately.
Spillage:
The immediate step is take in case of contact with caustic soda solution is to flush the affected areas with large volume of water. Speed in removal is the most important factor in limiting the severity of caustic burns. Any clothing that is contaminated should be removed right away and washed before being worn again.
Skin Contact:
Remove the caustic soda as fast as possible by flushing with large volume of water for at least 15 minutes. This may be followed by a rinse with dilute vinegar or citric acid solution. These first aid measures must be followed by treatment administered by a physician.
Eye Contact:
Wash the caustic soda from the eyes with a steady gentle stream of water for at least 15 minutes. Do not use soap. A doctor should be summoned immediately. |
